Here at East Haddam Free Public Library, we use our blog to tell you about upcoming events, new materials and much more! As a special 'thank you' for reading our blog, we invite you to enter a drawing to win a special prize.

Museum passes are available to East Haddam residents with a valid library card. Passes are loaned for two days (except during school vacations when passes are loaned for one day). A $10 deposit is required and will be returned when the pass is returned. Passes may be returned to our DVD/video drop box near the rear entrance.

June 25th 11 a.m. CT Audubon Society of Glastonbury presents "Minibeasts" for children age 5 and up.

June 25th 1 p.m. Music with Margie for children age 5 and up.

July 2nd 11 a.m. Wildlife program for children age 5 and up.

July 9th 3 p.m. Dinosaur Dig with Spike the Spinosaurus for children age 5 and up.

July 19th 10-noon R.E.A.D. Dogs

July 23rd 6:30 p.m. Origami with Claudia for children age 9 and up.

July 30 11 a.m. CT Audubon Society of Glastonbury presents "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" for children age 5 and up.

Family Fitness at EHFPL

Bring the whole family to EHFPL on Saturday, May 31st at 11 a.m. for tips, demonstrations, and resources for keeping fit as a family, presented by Lisa Cahill, owner of Curves in East Haddam! This hour-long presentation will also include healthy snacking ideas and the chance to make your own trail mix. Participants will have the opportunity to win some great prizes and each family will receive some take-home resources for staying fit and having fun as a family! Families with kids of all ages are welcome!

We the People Bookshelf

A small audience gathered at EHFPL on Wednesday, April 23rd to see the compelling story of Elizabeth Keckly as depicted by Stephanie Jackson and directed by Kandie Carle (both pictured here.) This presentation of "They Called Me Lizzie...from slavery to the White House" was sponsored by the library in order to highlight the library's receipt of a special grant from the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The 'We the People Bookshelf' provides grant recipients with a collection of books based on an annual theme. The theme of this year's bookshelf is 'Created Equal' and we were thrilled to receive 17 wonderful new books. Some books will be displayed in the children's area of the library (downstairs), while others, including four titles in Spanish, will be shelved in the young adult area (upstairs.)

Pigging Out at EHFPL!

The library welcomed Farmer Minor and his adorable pig Daisy today. Almost 40 children came to 'pig out on reading' as Farmer Minor told stories about living and traveling with Daisy. After reading one of Daisy's favorite books, the children lined up for the opportunity to pet and even hug Daisy. Wednesday, April 23rd @1 p.m. -- They Called Me Lizzy. Depicting the moving story of Elizabeth Keckly, this is a very special living history performance for ages 12 and up. Born into slavery in 1818, Lizzy eventually purchased her freedom and made her way to Washington D.C. and into the lives of President Abraham Lincoln and his wife Mary Todd Lincoln. From Slavery to the White House

The East Haddam Stage Company presents: They Called Me Lizzy....from Slavery to the White House on Wednesday, April 23rd,1 PM at the East Haddam Free Public Library in Moodus (across from the middle school). This free program is open to everyone age 12 and up.

Written and directed by Kandie Carle, this is the moving tale of one woman's life during the 19th Century. Her name was Elizabeth Keckly. Born into slavery in 1818, Lizzy eventually managed to purchase her freedom and make her way to Washington D.C. where her dressmaking skills and entrepreneurial savvy brought her to the attention of several political families.
Once the Lincoln's arrived in Washington, there was no turning back for Lizzy. Mary Lincoln hired her, putting into effect a relationship unlike any Lizzy had ever envisioned for herself. She was often there, in the room, with President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln during some of their most private and difficult moments.
While she is best known for her talents as Mary Todd Lincoln's dressmaker and 'stylist' if you will, the story before and beyond her connection to the White House is equally compelling.
Performed in retrospect, this dramatic recounting of Lizzy's experiences is much more than a slave narrative, it is a human story, sometimes tragic, sometimes triumphant, always fascinating.

February School Break with Audubon

The CT Audubon Society of Glastonbury will present "Hibernate, Migrate or Survive" on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 from 11 AM to noon in the children's library at East Haddam Free Public Library. An Audubon educational instructor will provide a fun, hands-on activity to help children in grades K through 4 learn about animal adaptation in the winter.

Story Tails R.E.A.D program a success at EHFPL!

More than a dozen children visited EHFPL on Saturday, January 26th to participate in the Story Tails R.E.A.D. program here at the library. The children had the opportunity to read aloud to any one of four very special Reading Education Assistance Dogs. Pictured here, Mercy listens attentively as a one of the participants reads aloud. Later Mercy, Ollie, Oola, and Quinn pose together following the event. EHFPL is looking forward to hosting Story Tails again so keep an eye on the blog for more information.
